Where To Stay: The Greenbrier

Where To Stay: The Greenbrier

Eat, Stay, Play

by Jen Pinkston

The Greenbrier isn’t just a hotel—it’s a full-sensory experience. The color, the print, the Wes-Anderson-Meets-Dorothy Draper vibe. From the moment we checked in, I understood why Katie’s been obsessed for years—and why for our Spring Ready-to-Wear, there really was no better stage.

From the black-and-white checkerboard floors to the candy-colored corridors to the unapologetically maximalist décor, the magic hits you the minute you walk in.

Tucked into the mountains of West Virginia, the Greenbrier has been welcoming guests since 1778. What started as a place where people came to “take the waters” at the nearby sulphur springs slowly turned into one of America’s most iconic resorts.

Over the years, it’s hosted royalty, presidents (26 of them), and plenty of everyday guests looking for a getaway. In fact, it was so closely tied to U.S. leadership that it once had a top-secret Cold War-era bunker built underneath it—meant to house Congress in case of a nuclear attack. That’s now open for public tours.

In the 1940s, the hotel got a major design refresh from Dorothy Draper, a bold and colorful decorator who gave the interiors their now-famous over-the-top look—think floral prints, stripes, and black-and-white floors. That style still defines the place today.

Through wars, renovations, and changes in ownership, the Greenbrier has remained a symbol of Southern hospitality and classic American resort life. Whether you’re there for the golf, the spa, or just to sit on the front porch and take in the view, it’s a piece of living history that’s still going strong.

Our Spring Ready-to-Wear collection is all about effortless style with a print-forward twist—easy silhouettes in mix-and-match prints, bold color, and the kind of pieces you can slip on and instantly feel put-together. Inspired by Katie’s own Southern roots and the spirit of hospitality she grew up with, the collection channels everything we love about a well-hosted moment: warmth, charm, and a little cheeky twist. The Greenbrier was the perfect setting—a place where tradition meets color, where getting dressed up is still a joy, and where no detail goes unnoticed.

There’s an almost movie-studio-backlot-like operation humming behind the scenes at the Greenbrier. Every piece of furniture that needs repair, reupholstery, or a fresh coat of paint—every lamp rewired, every sconce restored—it all happens right on the property. The attention to detail is unmatched, and the commitment to preserving Dorothy Draper’s iconic design vision is taken seriously at every turn. We were lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes tour of it all, and it felt like stepping into the inner workings of a living, breathing design legacy.

But nothing snaps you back to reality quite like chaotic travel. As we said goodbye to the Greenbrier—and all of its magic, which I’m not sure I’ve fully processed even now—reality hit us. A delayed connection in Virginia, the last rental car on the lot at a tiny regional airport, and a mad dash to make our next flight three hours away (we did it in two and a half, but who’s counting). As we weaved between semis and unbothered drivers with no sense of urgency, I couldn’t help but wonder: was it all a dream?
