Meet Ashley Spence, who is clad in her new favorite pair of workout pants, our Medallion Leaves Yoga Leggings. She is the owner of the happening downtown Austin yoga studio, Wanderlust. In her own words, Ashley shares how she found yoga and how it changed her life.
When did you start doing yoga?
I found yoga during a very difficult and dark time in my life. After enduring a traumatic sexual assault in college, the practice of yoga gave me the courage, peace, clarity and strength to begin my lifelong journey of healing. Yoga has empowered me to tap into the inner warrior within me and shown me the resiliency that I have to not only survive but to thrive. It has taught me to use meditation and pranayama (breathwork) to cope with anxiety and fear. Yoga can not change what has happened, but I believe it gives us the strength and inner peace to endure what we can not change, and in a safe space allows us to feel what we have suppressed so that we can begin to heal.
How did you start Wanderlust Yoga in Austin?
In 2010 attended my very first Wanderlust Yoga Festival in beautiful Lake Tahoe. I left this four-day yoga, music and community event so incredibly inspired and determined to make yoga my path forward in life. I went through yoga teacher training, and with persistence and hard work, I linked up with the creators of this life-changing Festival to become the founder of Wanderlust Yoga Austin, the first and flagship yoga studio under the Festival brand. Being a business owner is incredibly hard and humbling work.
Has being a small business owner been hard on you?
There were times when I really didn’t think that the Studio would make it. But with a village of amazing employees, teachers and students that pour their heart and soul into Wanderlust and the determination to never give up, our downtown location has been open almost six years and this spring we are thrilled to open our second location at the Domain in North Austin.
That is amazing congrats! So what is next for you?
I am honored and humbled to share this ancient practice that has truly saved my life with the Austin community. And for my fellow survivors (or warriors as I like to call you), I am in the process of launching Rising Voices, a platform for you to share your stories and courageously find your voice, and also to offer a pathway of healing and resiliency through yoga. You have an important story to be told and a voice that needs to be heard. Together, we will all rise up!
