Sensibly Chic Designs

Meet the ladies of Sensibly Chic Designs, Jill Butler and Meredith DeLano. The two women have beautifully perfected the balance between being mothers and entrepreneurs. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the ladies of Sensibly Chic Designs have incorporated Katie Kime prints into many of their clients homes, so we meet with them to get to know more about them and how they got started.

How did you get your start?

We both have 3 children and love to entertain in our homes.  We were friends who both loved style. When Meredith built a new home in 2014 we started informally sharing ideas back and forth and ultimately ended up designing her entire home. We immediately loved working together and throughout the process, gradually realized that we had distinct yet complementary styles. As soon as Meredith’s home was complete, we started getting calls for advice and help from family members, friends, friends of friends,  builders of spec homes and beyond. Everything grew from there!

Did you always want to work in interiors?

Design was a hobby and passion that, over time, became an unexpected career. Both Meredith and Jill had different careers.

What would you say makes your design style/ technique like no other?

We believe that every room should be designed in a manner that tells the story of those who live there.  Many of our clients have young families and look to us to make their homes elegant and unique while maintaining comfort and functionality.  We take the time to work with every one of our clients to ensure that we tailor designs to their unique needs while integrating colorful accents into their spaces. Some of our clients are best served when we push them beyond their comfort zone as a way to help them find the courage to add the bold new look they really want.  We want our client’s homes to feel full and complete after we are done. In short, our unique style is serenity with a classic look and a pop of color to tie it together.

Who or what is inspiring you right now?

Mrs. Paranjape, Lindsay Cowles, Kerri Rosenthal, Caitlin Wilson, Blue Octagon,Grasscloth/raffia wrapped furniture, Laquer mirrors/laquer painted furniture, Bold, statement wallpaper

How important is art to a home?

We believe art can help tell your story.  For us, wallpaper has become the MUST HAVE art for nearly every home.  The wallpaper we use IS the art that, when utilized correctly, pulls spaces together and brings them to life.

What’s you best tip for someone who isn’t sure of their “style”?

Everyone has their own unique style.  Our job is to help guide them in the right direction while using their style and our expertise.  Our tip to clients who are unsure of their style is to envision your “happy place” where you feel most at ease. As Jonathan Adler says “ a chic home makes you happy and a happy home makes you chic!”

Whats the most rewarding & challenging part about  owning your own business?

The most rewarding thing is the look on our client’s faces when they see the finished product!!! Having our “looks” liked by other designers through social media is so exciting for us!  Our biggest challenge is making sure we understand our clients but also they understand our vision as well and that we’re all on the same page.

How do you find work/ life balance as a business owner?

We laid out some ground rules when we first started that have been a great platform for us to make sure we maintain top priorities of our family coming first and maintaining healthy lifestyles.   We find ways to integrate work throughout each day. The best part of working together and living so close is we get to have bus stop briefings in the beginning and end of each day. Being able to be our own boss and making our own time schedule has made this career very beneficial and successful for both of us.
